AT HOME

Rooms, color, flowers, and the outdoors.

A room doesn’t need to behave like a showroom. Here are the choices that make a place feel lived in, useful, and unmistakably yours.

FROM FAUST A room can have opinions and still make space for the people who live there. Start with where you sit, where you walk, and what makes you want to stay.

READ THE ROOM

Before you change it, listen to it.

A room gives you clues. You do not have to solve everything before you can enjoy it.

What is already speaking?

If the red sofa is leading, let the smaller pieces have a quieter conversation. Color is allowed to have a personality.

Where do people go?

Walk the route you actually use. If a table makes everyone sidestep, give the people the right of way.

Where would you stay?

Sit down. Can you reach a light, see something you love, and linger? That is a better test than an empty-room photograph.

IF YOU ARE WONDERING

Before you change the room.

What if the room feels a little off?

Sit where you spend time. Notice the light, the way through, and what you reach for. Move one thing you own before you buy another.

Does a little deck count as a garden?

A few raised planters can put herbs within reach. Keep the walking path open and grow what you will actually use.

FOR TODAY

One small move to try. One thing Faust thinks earns its place.

ONE SMALL WAY TO TRY

Give the good chair a better view.

Turn one chair toward the window, a piece of art, or the person you actually talk to. Sit in it before you decide, and keep the path through the room clear.

FAUST RECOMMENDS

Start with the lamp you own.

Move it to the place where you read or talk before looking for another. The right pool of light may already be in the house.

KEEP WANDERING

Something else might catch your eye.

Choose the idea you want to explore next. There is no wrong room to walk into.
